I have only surface level knowledge of WH40k.
Space Marines are super-soldiers, but few in number (like, 1000 per faction or something?)
So, in the grand scheme of things, there really aren't enough of them to protect humanity, are there? Is it mostly up to the regular army (and nun army)?
Anonymous No.5877049 [Report] >>5878727 >>5886655
>>5877043
yeah that's basically the big problem. planets will send ouy distress signals for alien invasions and wont get astartes for like 100 years. planets out number space marines like 1,000 to 1. human colonies are getting constsntly wiped out and fuck if they even know about it given how unreloable communication is.
Anonymous No.5877067 [Report] >>5878727 >>5878893 >>5896490
>>5877043
Whether they deploy at full chapter strength or only send a few hundred or even a few dozen marines, modern Astartes chapters are largely shock assault special forces that strike key elements and positions in support of the larger human armies, which are usually in the upper tens of thousands to tens of millions. During the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, the original Legions were about 100-200k and were the frontline force, while the millions of human troops were considered auxiliaries. It's still a seemingly low number, but with proper support and logistics, they're so mobile and lethal that even a few thousand marines and their air and armored elements can conquer a world through decapitation strikes. The difference between the 30th and 40th millennium is that that support often isn't there due to the degeneration of logistical and administrative efficacy and siloing of military assets to prevent another Horus Heresy, forcing Marines to be self sufficient and operate on a much smaller scale. They still punch way above their weight, I recommend watching the Astartes miniseries to get an idea of what a small squad can do and then extrapolate that up to an entire chapter or legion size plus air/armor/artillery/orbital support.

Can loreflags explain to me the Administratum, I recall reading that entire planets can get "lost" in paperwork due to inefficiencies/incompetence, and that some departments have in fact completely outlived their original intent, yet they still operate. How does this even happen, is communication that poor in the Imperium? Does the Administratum not have some department head or ultimate leader that can coordinate things, or is this even attempted?
Anonymous No.5878759 [Report]
>>5878727
because the imperium is dealing with hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of planets, all with multiple cities that have hundreds of billions of people each. imagine the amount of paperwork that would get sent everywhere. communication is also terrible, if you want to send a message you basically need to send an email but instead of using the internet you send it through hell and demons can eat the email.

i dont know if it was a fan story or lore but i remember reading that the time keeping part of the imperium had civil war because they couldn't decide on the year, thats the incompetence of leader ship you'll also be dealing with

Alotta people keep asking about the lore.

40K lore is fucked right now. They've changed alot. They've had multiple different authors write alot. previously the only cannon was the codexes and rule books but at some point they made the Black Library stuff canon too. When they did that it all went to hell just like comic book canon. Some authors ackknowlege some things others don't.

>Starchild
The Sensei were originally the children of the Emperor that he had fucking regular people. He had alot of kids being a fucking immortal being. They were immortal too.

>>5878727
The Administratum are literally the bureaucracy and logistics of the Imperial.
Communication long distances are handled through Psychic messages and can arrive late or before you even sent them. Sometimes never arriving at all. This happens with everything through the warp.

>>5877043
A standard chapter is 1000 Astartes. Some chapters like the Black Templars are overstrength. Some are near extict like the Lamentors

I HIGHLY suggest you stop seriously looking at Lore. They even started retconning core things from the 80s just for political reasons. If you want look up the Fragum Fragem something like that Lore Bible. /tg/ is the place to ask this shit.

There used to be only one race of human. Everyone was like the Spainiards. This made painting easier and GW only needed one type of skin tone. The Only "blacks" literally charcoal black were Salamanders due to gene seed anomaly. There were no asians or whites. All bred out of existence and killed in race wars prior to the Techno Barbarian wars.

That "no fan animation" policy was pure retardation and they never acted on it because GWs execs probably realized that enforcing it was not just impossible but also pointless. Its the kind of thing that a law firm comes up because they want to create more work that they can bill their corporate client for and that executive sign off on because they don't fully understand the costs involved.

It comes down to a small group of Zionists at the very tippy top of the Bush administration who wanted to eliminate Iraq as a threat to Israel. That's it. The rest is propaganda to justify it.

There is no starting point. Literally just do something like pick a game to play and learn the specific lore about that game's setting and characters. Next game you get into will have some overlap but lots of new stuff. Rinse and repeat, maybe read one of the horus heresy books to get backstory oa a specific chapter's origin story. Maybe some rogue trader era codex and flick through it for vibes. Pick another codex that has a cool cover next.

This is basically how people have been getting into the setting for decades.

Yes and no. The bulk of the fighting is done by the Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy who number in the trillions, but the Space Marines play a significant role as well. Sometimes they fight separately, sometimes they support each other. An individual space marine chapter may be limited to only ~1000 marines, but considering the power of just a single one of them, 1,000 is a might force to be reckoned with. Also a chapter is not just the marines themselves, each chapter is complete combined arms group with their own spacecraft, ground and air vehicles, and in some cases strategic weapons, so they can fight wherever, whenever, without needing to call for support. Also there are hundreds of space marines chapters spread throughout the Imperium. There is usually at least one space marine chapter in any given Imperial system, or at least in the sub-sector.

That's why Imperial Armour books worked so well. The Guard deploy en masse and occasionally some big shot SM chapter rolls in destroys a vital shipping port or fuel supply and fucks back off to somewhere else. That one strike however lets the guard ultimately win. Contrary to all the trailers and promos SM chapters very rarely deploy as an entire chapter.

I've always thought this shit looked cool, there used to be a store near me I would look in the window and just nope. Fat balding neck beards or skinny fat greasy looking pale dudes.

What's the best way to get into the lore? I don't want to collect

Either pick a faction and start reading their books, play some of the games, or watch some youtube videos about it. 40k has exploded in popularity in recent years where even vtubers are into it now. I recommend the Cain and Gaunt books since I personally don't like spess muhreens and need muh guardsmen. Also please keep in mind that literally everything in the setting is written so james workshop can sell more plastic so don't take it too seriously. The last time I was in a 40k thread on /tg/ there were two autists going on multi-paragraph rants back and forth arguing about if necron ships had ftl drives or some shit.
