First, stop by the local police department. Ask them how to go about registering, purchasing a weapon. Then openly state you would like a concealed weapons permit. Tell them you would rather get the facts from the police than doing a google search.
Next step, buy your firearm.
Oregon has a stand your ground law as well as a heavy self defense law. Do not let someone intimidate you and always state "I was fearful for my life and of the lives of those around me."
Always have a lawyer as people will try and blame you, even for a good shooting.
Do not ever threaten with or brandish the weapon. Don't let anyone know you even have it on your persons. If they attack you and evidence shows you made the first aggressive move, even touching where your weapon is, you can get sent to jail for aggravating the situation.
Now back to the police thing. Visit them regularly if they are helping with anything firearm or weapon related. Continue to talk to them and voice your worry about the safety and dangers of the community. If the police let you keep your weapon/s then they feel you are a reasonable enough person.
Openly voice your safety concerns to people around you, along with the police, so if anything is brought up in court you have voiced your worries and doesn't seem like you went out of your way to instigate an attack.
Finally, call the police first in any incident. Have them on the line and state "I am feeling threatened and my life may be in danger." They will try and tell you to de-escalate the situation, but now you can take the next step. Follow their instructions, unless you feel your life is in danger, thus the police call. With no police present, shooting someone who is a threat is now more viable.
Remember "I was fearful of my life and of the lives of those around me." This is your saving grace.
Do not have records of searches relating to matters of aggression. You can however have records of Gun Safety, Self Defense, Weapon training, etc.
