I'll post the other important information down below but here's some for now: I have a Geforce GTX 1660 for the graphics card, I have an i7-9700f cpu, @ 3 ghz, and 16 gigs of ram total. Baseboard: Gigabyte tech. Couldn't play Oblivion the remake w/o it stuttering and I can't play Doom:tda... Do I get a new rig or upgrade some parts? Any other info you need, let me know.

You're already near the highest you can go in that board. The CPU can be upgraded to the i9 9900k but that's as far as you can go, and by now that's an older and very expensive CPU from 4 gens ago. Wouldn't recommend paying that much for that little improvement.

It would be better to only upgrade the GPU to extend the life of your PC and prepare for a full upgrade later. You'll likely need a higher wattage PSU too because stronger GPUs need a lot more juice, but later you can carry the PSU over along the GPU and ram into the new system.

An used 1080 ti wound give you 200% your current performance, and anything on the 20 series would be a x3 improvement on any games despite keeping an older CPU, as the GPU matters a lot more on the performance.

Sorry for my ignorance, I don't come to this board often.

That's what I was thinking after I tried to ask reddit/plebbit for such advice but they weren't as straight forward as you- I know I'll have to save up for a new rig.

Here's a "nothing to lose" situation. Get a new gpu (that you would get if you were to get this new rig) and pop it into your current pc. If it works out and your performance is good enough, you're done. game away. If you're still fucked, then buy the rest of the parts only now you already have the gpu?

I suspect (but not sure because I don't fuck with gpu hardware discussions much) that it is possible your only problem is vram. So I think it is possible that you can get a new gpu with good vram (5060 ti 16 gb)? or a budget amd RX or something with like 8 or gb or something in between and it might fix the stutters if you are running out of vram.

For Oblivion it is, and it would probably help w/ a couple other games I got for now. I have 6 gigs for vram and Oblivion needs 8... I bought this rig in early 2021 and I thought it was the best thing there was; now I'm looking at possibly spending between 2500-4500 for a very good pc, and that'll take a while for me to save.

Nooo, don't do that. For approx $1000 you get a system with quite a few more years of gaming on it while you anticipate the upcoming AI paradigm shift in the future mobo+GPU card pairings.

>I have 6 gigs for vram and Oblivion needs 8
The modern games use 12GB. It's more or less agreed by the major youtube game channels that 8GB VRAM is insufficient for the games coming out now. So it's basically 16GB GPU that you're looking for.

Radeon 9060 16GB is your baseline budget GPU $439 at Amazon

The previous advice to get the GPU and plug it into your existing system was reasonable as long as you have enough power. But the modern GPU want more lanes than your old board has. So you're going to be getting a new mobo and CPU.

*note: AMD is going to discontinue support for 650series mobo in favor of the 850series mobo. So you will probably get a different one instead of the MSI Pro B650M-P in the system above.

**Ragnarok Online runs fine on your existing system without a GPU card. ha ha

7600 is the better choice over the 7400F which is less ideal unless you are using water to keep it cooler than an air cooler solution. I prefer air, so the 7600 is preferred to the 7400F.

If you only looked at that news from months ago, you should note that the generation changes are coming out faster now. nVidea seems to be halving the Rubin release cycle time periods probably because both Rubin and the next architecture beyond that are designed using AI. Improvements have been much faster with AI design help. So releases will be sooner than the previously announced 2026 to 2027 Rubin years. It will be 2025 to 2026 for first gen 50petaFlop and 2026 to 2027 for 2nd gen 100+ petaFlop processors. 2027 will then have the AI capable GPU.

You will have sunk so much into the PC that you'll need to keep using it well after Rubin has come out. Don't lock yourself into 50-series blackwell.

Use PC Parts Picker. Or you can visit some sites that are willing to post guides for sets of parts for a baming PC complete system at various price points. For example see:

Don't overspend.

Must you have RGB and other "Look At Me" PC parts shining and glowing?

I miss those old days of a PC box having zero glass or transparent plastic panels. Might as well drive a car with ground effects lighting.
