How does one make transparent background for images?
When I'm trying to use magic wand tool on background for this picture (in paint.NET), it just selects most of the picture, probably because colors are similar. Does it work only with simple backgrounds?

Adobe has a tool on their site, it seems with some ai capabilities which get the work done.

The correct way is to create a mask layer with the path tool and "cut out" your desired parts
What you did is color or border selection which never is as clean as masking but a lot faster
Last but not least you can also erase the surroundings, but be careful of "artifacts" (left over pixels)
Every decent shoop Programm can do these 3 things
Best is still masking (or rendering as /w/ would say)
