Worked in safe mode. Should have done a troubleshoot in safe mode for a while but no use for regrets now.

So the question now is should I keep going and try to reinstall security essentials or should I just accept I fucked up and wait for the old girl to die with some alternative antivirus? Keep in mind Microshit cutoff support for win7 which includes purging all their actually good help pages and support Q&A threads ancient forum posts keep linking too.

We don't know the source of the issue here, without testing, which makes it difficult to make recommendations
>should I just accept I fucked up and wait for the old girl to die with some alternative antivirus?
Windows 7, like XP before it, isn't going to die because of malware, it is going to die because new software you want to use wont support it, No one wants to support an OS the creator themselves wont even support, surely you knew that going into the whole "i'm just going to keep using 7 instead of using the free switch to W10"

My point was, you are literally asking for help, for a Windows 7 machine, if you have a W10 machine, and this W7 machine is a 'shitbox' then I think the obvious recommendation is to reinstall Windows 7, something is clearly wrong at the OS level for you to be unable to uninstall software, and reinstalling is faster than tracking that down

I was hoping I wouldn't have to that but I guess I will have to bite the bullet. A shame.

Do you need to uninstall, or just go ahead and load a newer os?

I unfortunately don't memorize error codes or have a lookup table, we would be googling the same thing at this point, a Windows 7 reinstall without an SSD wouldn't take 15 hours, just sayin

Yes it is.

Again, do you NEED to uninstall it first, or can you just go through the process of installing a newer os?

This is an old gaming rig and most of the stuff on here is likely memory holed just because if any site still exists their download links might still go to shit like zippyshare (dead site). Since I already have an actual Win10 machine this old girl has zero value for anything else.

This is also why I am apprehensive about reinstalling Win7 too.

Well, what I usually do is look for a physical copy of the os on Ebay or the like on either a disc or flash drive, not Amazon, though, as they'll just give you a price that says

System Restore did not solve the issue of why I tried to do an uninstall + reinstall of security essentials.

Can you even update it to a newer os? Does it have the graphics hardware?

Looks like you need it truly wiped. Good luck with that, as people who don't charge more than the computer is worth go
>System restore! I'm so clever!
then quit like babies when it won't work.

Kind of defeats the point of getting win10 when I already have a machine for it. Everything is just right and it would really suck for me for losing my comfiest setup when I only play old games on it. The most annoying part is that system checks do not tell me much if anything so whatever data corruption has messed up my system is so small and obscure this is just so frustrating.

Maybe a repair install might work?

Do you have anything that can scan for bad sectors?
