Recently finished Cerebus and was blown away by it. The art, lettering, paneling, story, satire, originality, literally everything was firing on all cylinders and quite honestly it's ruined comics for me because nothing else compares to it.
What other comics tick all the same boxes Cerebus did?
Cerebus is easily my number one with Sandman a distant second. I've tried Jeff Smith's Bone but can't get past the first few pages, same for Fables so far

Maybe try Omaha the Cat Dancer, Blacksad, or Transmetropolitan? Omaha starts out really smutty, but stick with it: it gets better. Blacksad is 40's noir. And Transmetropolitan is near-future with commentary that still holds up years later.

From picrel I'd recommend Asterios Polyp for layout and panelling; then I Kill Giants and Usagi Yojimbo.
Other US comics I liked:
Prophet starting from the Image reboot;
Sin_City-That_Yellow_Bastard
The Marquis by Guy Davis;
The Maxx;
Next comment I'll post a few of my Euro recs.

For energy and detail:
Vampire Requiem Knight by Olivier Ledroit;
Wika, also by Olivier Ledroit;
The Swindling Indies (Les Indes fourbes) by Alain Ayroles and Juanjo Guarnido (same artist as Blacksad, but this has superior storytelling)

Sounds like you want long form storylines with a more serious tone in comics, and b&w art being a benefit?
>Zebra Girl
Yes, this is a webcomic from the fucking 90's. And it starts out as a weird gag comic, but if you just give it a little time it morphs into an absurdist Wonderland journey that I imagine isn't too far from Cerebus. And the art is generally phenomenal. Do be aware you'll have to zoom the pages somewhat since it's in an ancient and woefully small resolution.

>MEGA
Maybe not as dramatic as Cerebus, but it's an amazing comic with interesting premises. And the portrayal of its characters gives it a nerve and raw vibe that most other comics about giant monsters would've sorely missed.

>Winter World
More 80's action movie (the good kind!) than previous mentions, but Zaffino's b&w art makes this a must-read and setting and tone of the comic are just *chef's kiss*

>The Forever War
Total hard scifi kino, and in just the kind of stark b&w good comics are meant to be in.

>Concrete
It's been years since I read this, but I remember people liking it back in the day, and it had a certain charm to its portrayal of everyday characters, life and situations... with a touch of extraordinary in form of it's main character.

>The Marquis by Guy Davis;
Oof, so fucking good and with goddamn stellar art. You dont get much closer to a Bloodborne comic than this. I recommend looking into the early parts of BPRD since it had Davis doing it. BPRD was a pretty good action X-Files comic all the way through, but Davis art made it something special.
>The Maxx;
...I'd actually recommend the cartoon for this one? Even if Kieth's art is great

Oh shi- I forgot the one I was supposed to start my post with:
>The Ogre Gods
A dark fairy tale alรก Grimm coming to life with absolutely world class art and the camera very close to its characters and their inner lives. Very much a recommended read!
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/The-Ogre-Gods

And a comic with much lighter and cartoony (but still absolutely great Franquin-inspired) art that at a glance hides it's rather haunting subjects and tone of the story. This one has been going for 10+ years and is also a goddamn must-read:

More or less. I think what was most appealing about Cerebus was that it was part of the underground comix movement of the late 70s to 90s. The unbridled creativity of Sim and people like R. Crumb were really new and out there to me.
I appreciate the recs, I'll probably give Concrete a shot and maybe The Marquis. The Maxx also seems like it'd scratch my itch with the 90s aesthetic
