It means exactly what it says. Living a lie can be comfortable. The truth is a bitter pill to swallow. Without more context from the poem, all we can get from this is the subject was found rightly guilty of a crime and instead of making up excuses for why he did what he did, he accepted the jard truth that he still did what he did and took what was coming to him without complaint.
