NTA but the secret to understanding the New Testament is realizing that it was written by authors who disagreed with each other about things and weren't afraid to modify their stories to that end, with some editing later to make the authors seem more in agreement with each other than they were in reality. And I think it can be seen that Matthew is in some ways is reactionary, a Jewish Christian counter to the earlier Jesus of Mark and to the authentic writings of Paul which are more opposed to the Jewish law.

E.g. While Mark's Jesus justifies breaking the Sabbath by boldly saying "The Sabbath was made for humankind and not humankind for the Sabbath," Matthew cuts that out and just has Jesus end his justification by saying that Jesus himself is the Lord of the Sabbath.

Or while Paul says "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Matthew walks that back as well by having Jesus say, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."
