Just because asbestos has some decent qualities doesn't change the fact that it's still a carcinogen. You make a horrible mistake of ignoring all other effects because one's interesting and potentially positive. It's like people who end up as zombified junkies just because drugs they were taking had some positive effect they latched onto.

Believable. Grades as given on the basis of how well you performed certain tasks. If your brother was to, for example, check some particular chemical qualities of the material and instead he went off tangent to research how it handles radiation, no wonder he had issues.
