Perceptual filtering - the process of focusing attention on a selected subset of the large number of stimuli that are present at any one time. Perceptual filtering is necessary because the cognitive and physical capacity of an individual to process and respond to multiple sources of information is limited.

1. Place a small object behind you. Not in your normal line of sight, but in view of a mirror.
2. Look in the mirror for 10+ minutes, without turning around.
3. What objects are behind you right now? Answer it and turn.

Are things on their usual places? Did looking into a mirror changed anything?
