been on the job 5 years
seen methheads chew on tires and a guy try to stab a ghost
nothing surprises me anymore
get a call around 3:17 AM
domestic disturbance, neighbors say screaming and "wet thuds"

draw sidearm, step inside

find bodies in the living room
mom, dad, younger brother

not just dead—mangled
like someone had fun
hear crying from upstairs

sitting in the corner, blood on her shirt
arms shaking
big cut on her forearm
says her older brother did it
"He smiled the whole time. Said it wasn’t them anymore.”
says he snapped during dinner and started killing everyone
last thing she remembers is him leaning over her with the knife
ask where he is
"He's gone now. He said his work here was done."

drive back to the house

like, never touched clean
no blood, no tape, no cruiser tire marks
neighbors walking dogs like nothing happened
knock on the door

says she’s lived there 12 years
no kids
definitely no massacre
go to the hospital
no record of the girl
nurse looks at me like I’m high
