Why does my friend constantly think about killing others and himself?
He's a functioning adult with a job and everything who appears mostly normal and nice from the outside but inside he's constantly thinking about killing himself and others.

Why is he like this

Abuse and PTSD are a likely cause. Also not having a partner can be very detrimental.

I have the same situation, but I am a hermit so it is much different. This contributes more than most people know. Love and affection are key to helping men grow up more compassionate and less violent. I know this might not be paranormal but maybe helping him here would be a good start.

The easy answer would be shame. Even with a childhood most would consider great, there are always going to be things that are missing, and people tend to ignore them out of shame. The more of ourselves we disregard the more we drift from what completes us into what stimulates us. Negative stimuli are more powerful than positive stimuli and so those thoughts dominate, especially if we believe ourselves deserving of them in some way. Sometimes its even less complicated; it could just be a pattern of escape that has been repeated so often it perpetuates itself. Thoughts like these easily mask suffering if they have no obvious cause. Dwelling on them means putting the real issues aside without having to take responsibility.

Desperation brings doubt, doubt brings uncertainty, uncertainty brings fear, and fear takes us from our deepest desires. If you doubt you can be loved you become uncertain of yourself and your worthiness. With this comes the fear that justifies that doubt, and clinging to it brings a self fulfilling prophecy.

It's much better to focus on what you already have and to grow it with love, because then instead of those fears new love comes to light. It's not an easy frame of mind to retain, and doing so means living with pain and loneliness, these things don't go away on their own. We must take steps with the proper intentions to find more, but doubt only hides what might be in store.

Your word, not mine. I'm talking about the source of all spiritual growth. Awareness of identities and the relationships with each other requires a well directed focus. As this awareness grows the options available grow. LoA isn't unrelated, but it's also a limited framing meant to help people who aren't really willing to do the work for themselves. It's only as effective as the framing of the practice is relevant to the one attempting it.

Keep trying your best to do the right things and avoid doing any wrongs things in life and you'll be on the right path to getting what you desire the most. I don't know for sure the specifics of achieving your goals, but what I do know for sure is that all you have to do is to not give up hope, keep pushing forward, and you'll make it work. It's really that simple. And if you still feel like harming yourself or others, don't be afraid to ask for help from others to help you out with your current state of mind. This negative state of mind doesn't define you, they are symptoms of another problem that can be fixed with effort and time. Good luck OP

Having to work is awful and wanting to die is a normal and healthy response to such a fate.
