For 3 years , during 1999-2001 after 9/11 , I was not homeless because of drugs or mental issues i was homeless by choice a ran away from home die to my alcoholic parents end of that.
I chose the subway tunnels because believe it or not it was the safest place to be not getting harassed by police , or bum bashers (groups of people that would abuse or kill homeless people).
My time living there was a complete nightmare i would see things others could not explain animals insects and creatures people can not even explain.

Underground utilities that are that large are built so water treatment doesn't overflow in the event of excess rainfall or flooding.
Just this week I had to replace a channel monster (shreds tampon wrappers and other shit). We couldn't get to it safely because of a pretty good rainfall with a ton of excess water and raw sewage just pouring into the adjacent stream.
I'm in a fairly small city, but I'm larger cities with more flat infrastructure and pavement, the cannels need to be very large in case a pump breaks alongside a very wet year.

Generally people live in the emergency water ways, but I've seen entire villages in places like Los Angeles that don't receive nearly enough rainfall to wash these people out.
