If you're in a room of your peers and you still don't get it, that might actually be okay if they can make you understand. But if you're in a crowd of laymen and you still can't describe your field of study, that's a sure sign that you should get out.
Other emotions, like anger and frustration, or even feelings of loneliness or abandonment, are things that can be overcome later through family or redefining yourself. The most critical sign to GTFO is not understanding it. That will present problems you either can't solve or will turn into bigger problems because you don't know to not douse fires with gasoline.
