It was written to address what was described in Gen 6:1-5, so it’s at least “in response” to that (as opposed to making shit up out of whole cloth).
It’s also directly referenced in both Jude and Peter, so THEY thought it was “real.”
Several things written in Revelation also make a helluva lot more sense if you assume John also believed the general Enochian narrative (the Sons of God in the abyss, etc). The Legion of demons wanting Jesus to cast them into pigs instead of sending them to the “Abyss” also makes more sense.
Several early church fathers wanted it canonized.
It’s an interesting book, for sure.
