What sort of things can it do for you? And how do you bring about its presence into your life? How do you earn its protection and good will and favor? Does it really leave you immediately if you sin or look at porn etc? When does it come back?

You're in luck my life has been full of God's spirit lately.
So if God was a floating shiny blob you could look at and die.
And Jesus was God's avatar.
Then God's Spirit is this undetectable...thingy.
It's still God but he remains hidden unless you look for him.
He can make you feel really good, like heroin good, but that's not his main goal.
His main goal is to make your life educational and guide you, particularly when you ask, seek, and knock.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. Only Jesus Christ can baptise you with the Holy Spirit, and prior to that you can look at getting baptised with water to help with your journey and to build faith, so talk to a vicar or priest from a Church that is true to scripture to learn more.

It also helps, in meekness and faith, to talk to God in the name of his holy and perfect Son, Jesus Christ, ask for teaching and guidance, ask to receive the Holy Spirit to help you understand, to see, to hear God - and go on asking. You must understand that, as a gift from heaven, it is a perfect and holy gift - so we should all try to be more perfect and holy, which is only possible in following Jesus Christ.

Christ sent the Holy Spirit to the Apostles in Pentecostes day which kickstarted them to preach and form the Church, and the rite follows that line since

You receive the Holy Ghost as you get saved, which you can be by believing in your heart the historical record of the life, death, burial and physical resurrection of Jesus the son of God as laid out in the Bible (use the King James version or you'll be doctrinally incapacitated in no time), acknowledging that He's right about you being a hopeless sinner and reaching out to him in a simple prayer asking Him to save you.

Yet He (not "it") remains with you through thick and thin along with the lord Jesus Christ and the Father.

If you could lose Him somehow (by sinning or otherwise), then you wouldn't be "sealed" as the Bible says, the day of redemption being our coming physical resurrection.

As for what He can do for you, the 2 things that stand out the most about Him are comfort in time of sorrow (available to every saved person) and spiritual discernment, at least in my case, but everyone does not receive the exact same gifts, which you can read about all throughout the NT, though be sure not to mistake gifts with the ability to perform miracles for public consumption; that was only for a time as a sign for the jews.
