So I subscribe to a very vaguely defined mindset that 'magic' can be done in a great manner of different ways, and that different belief systems that seem to contradict can both be true by explaining the same phenomena and processes in different terms (like how there was a scientific debate between 'dark matter' and 'wrong gravity' both of which were essentially different ways of viewing the same thing).

Recently I have met a man who I believe to be some sort of mage. I don't know if he'd consider himself one in such terms, but he clearly just *gets it* in a way that people like us just *get it*. I can see him aligning the world to his will, I've seen him do it to me and I've openly acknowledged it to his face; not as a way to call him out, I liked what he did, but as a way to say "I see you".

Do any of y'all have experience of a similar variety? A mage of a 'rival tradition' so to speak, someone who is clearly the same type of creature as you even if they are a different breed? How do you deal with them?

I think magic works kinda like the orc magic in warhammer where it doesn’t actually make any logical sense but still ends up working out somehow. I’ve been to the /OMG/ threads and I’ve downloaded and read a bunch of books but I haven’t ever seen anyone apply any of those things I’ve read in real life or in person, at least not that I’m aware of.

I have met people in real life who I have suspected were magic folk, but I typically only find them around arty stuff like music venues, or at art exhibits and stuff. I think being creative in general is a kind of magic but I just don’t really know how it works, but I’ve seen some shit.

yes, on youtube. I stopped looking at the videos to not give him my attention. He wanted power, and i did not agree with his wish because truly and fundamentally we ALL are ignorant. So to not acknowlodge your ignorance while having and wanting more power is unwise and dangerous. Still, what he did changed me and i'll always remember. I don't think we should be looking for that kind of power, i think being humble and empathetic are the wise way to deal with everything.

I know what you're talking about. The real secret of magic is that you don't need to wear a robe and chant, or kill animals and make pacts with spirits. It's just the ability to figure out how to get the world to align with you. In situations where it doesn't you can still temporarily make it passive enough for you to move on without too much trouble. I met a chick in China who called me out on it during a wedding over there. We didn't talk about it much but she told me she was into esoteric Daosim, I told her I was into Hermeticism. She academically knew of it, didn't have any understanding of it. I don't have any experience with Daoist gurus and that strain of culture, so I don't get were she gets it from. Still, we respected one another and moved on.
