yea that's kind the point of symbolism. they represent something that is deeper and more powerful than it just appears.

I think symbols can be everything. They're just like symbols. You can orchestrate a pattern that associates corn with bravery and bureaucratic organization, and make a corn warrior bureaucrat god or something. Our cultures come loaded with symbols and we are attached to them, it's difficult to lose association once it is there.
