Where does the Pentacle of Solomon come from? I thought it would be in the Greater Key of Solomon but it wasn't in the one I just flipped through.

What I really want to know is what that bit in the center means. In some versions it looks like "LX pus" but in some versions the "L" looks like a cross and sometimes tilted.

Hexagram in the middle comes from Abano "Elucidation of Necromancy" better known from its printed edition "Heptameron Elements of Magic".
This Great Pentacle variant first appears in XVIII century french manuscripts of solomonic magic like "Keys of Rabbi Solomon"

My instinct has been that the first weird L character is actually a Tironian et, with the XPŪS being XPS, or Christ; giving you a load of divine names "and Jesus" at the middle of it all. It's UPG but makes sense to me. Not sure about the U with macron, though. It's bugged me for ages.

check this essay out, the frater theorizes that the sigil to the left of the abbreviated "Christus" is either a modified Saturn glyph or an aleph.
