There's three sides. Hurt out of hurting, hurt out of "justice" and hurt out of pleasure. The cult starting out of hurt, wanting equality and all that false promise. Then when he killed everyone that was either done out of justice if he truly believed in his own words, or out of pleasure as a sort of retaliation against his entire cult being destroyed. Seeing as he shot himself instead of drinking he did it all out of pleasure.
