In 1998, a sequel to Dumb and Dumber was greenlit in an alternate timeline not far from ours.

It was called THE PRODIGAL SONS.

Not the awful Dumb and Dumberer. Not the tired 2014 cash-in. This one actually landed.

In that world, Dumb and Dumber: The Prodigal Sons was a satirical financial road-trip comedy written by the Farrelly Brothers and Bennett Yellin, shot between early to mid '98. It followed Harry and Lloyd as they accidentally destabilized (and briefly saved) the U.S. economy through an absurd tech startup, pudding-based economics, and a choking royal corgi.

BOOB.EXE. Lava lamps. Waffle-based investment portfolios.

In that world, Godzilla vs. Gamera was greenlit as part of Toho’s “Millennial Reconciliation Project” - a 2002-2003 initiative that bridged timelines and rival studios to mark the 40th anniversary of King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).

The film dropped in August 2003, co-produced by Toho and Daiei under temporary rights-sharing and directed by Shusuke Kaneko, who had helmed the acclaimed Heisei Gamera Trilogy (1995–1999).

Tone-wise? It was brutal, mythic, and shockingly elegant. Godzilla was the eternal judgment, Gamera the reluctant protector. The tagline:

“Two gods awaken. Only one will leave the fire.”

The film opened with a recreated newsreel montage from 1962 - but twisted.
In this world, Kong never came. In this world, Gamera answered.

And no one who saw the Cathedral Fight - the moment Gamera shielded a crumbling Tokyo church from Godzilla’s atomic breath, wings torn - ever forgot it.

There were two endings:

One for theaters, one for late-night satellite. Only one ended with silence over Mount Mihara.

In 1984, Godzilla falls. The sacrifice is forced. Humanity lives on, haunted but spared.

In the 2003 satellite ending, it's Gamera who falls into Mihara - not to destroy Godzilla, but to hold him back.

He binds the judgment-god within the mountain as the lava surges. There's no triumph. Only containment.

The final shot:

A child’s drawing pinned to a broken telephone pole.

Gamera with wings spread. Underneath:
“He stopped the fire.”

The camera lingers. No music. Just the wind and distant thunder over Mihara’s crater.

Theatrical audiences never saw that ending.
But those who watched on late-night NHK knew:
