I remember one person described to me exactly why this place is so fucked up and it made sense to me. This place for all intents and purposes is hell, it may not be obvious at first because this is the only place we know (with having our memories wiped). This world was not originally like this, but was taken over by parasites who liken themselves as gods, and established all the major religions. The ones with souls power this place, they were either captured or came here to wake people up, or may have completely lost their way from being here so long. The NPCs are like the shadow beings that were thrown out of heaven for being little shits, and were sent to the lowest depths of consciousness. Having found sparks of the divine floating around, they constructed the 3D as a prison of sorts, with the flesh body avatar as a vessel of limitation. Meanwhile the demiurge and its minions run things in the 4D. People with souls are blind to this and think the 3D is all there is, unless they start to awaken.
Now the 3D is a heaven to them, much better than the abyssal darkness before, but it is hell to us. And how do they power this abomination? Bleeding people of emotional energy, hence the violence, bloodshed, heartache, and any matter of evil used to bastardize the soul and leave it fragmented. This was a place meant to break souls
