What are good alternatives to antidepressants that offer the same effectiveness?

My mind and soul feel pretty weak right now.

(If your answer is meditation, ignore.)

I'm with OP, but I've already tried:

>meditation/prayer, supplements, exercise, eating healthy

I just don't enjoy anything. I get anhedonia no matter what I try.

This is just life past 25, there nothing to enjoy anymore as our brains have matured. Games, shows/movies, social activites, going for walks etc. all of it is just a slog nowadays. Alcohol, the thing that has worked for me all these years, has become boring as well. I honestly don't think there is much to do about these situations, you just gotta accept the fact that life isn't as exciting as we once thought when we were kids.

When you started drinking you weren't that way. Then everything got worse until now, when even the booze won't help. It's not a solution for anything, temporary or otherwise.

Stop drinking and go walk a trail. See the world around you as you truly are.

St John's-wort I've read can be used to help treat depression as a potential alternative to antidepressants, so that's something you can research online if you're curious. Sunlight and by extension vitamin D do in fact help significantly with treating depression as well, since sunlight is energy after all. And I'm sure just eating nutritious food will help you out as well.

In my personal experience, I would focus on sunlight as your basic foundation in order to treat and reverse your depression. Antidepressants have personally worked for me as well so far, but everybody's different.

Anyways, I hope you guys treat and reverse your guy's own depression, and please make sure to never give up hope and continue to believe in victory and you will overcome this difficult obstacle no matter how bad it gets, i believe in you guys!

Good luck, godspeed, and please take care anons. Thanks!

They aren't effective so that would be bad advice.

To feel better you need to be appreciated for who you are (Or who *you* think you are). That's partially your responsibility, because people aren't going to appreciate a fat loser who does speedruns all day and isn't even good at it.

>good alternatives to antidepressants that offer the same effectiveness?
Long term change via small incremental habits done over long periods of time. Worked for me (started in 2020).
>first year
I slowly gathered daily habits like: making my bed, drinking lots of water, showering once a week, taking one multivitamin, doing 100 pedals on a bike per day, meditating for 5 minutes (I couldn't focus for more then 8 seconds at a time before getting distracted). Depression turned into being serious feeling.
>year 2
Habits strengthened: Meditation/exercise got better. I started being able to play video games again (I felt neutral, not joyful but it was engaged like when you grind to get gear).
>Year 3
Had serious gains. Depression turned into feeling ok (mostly). I could deal with people again. I could plan ahead (schedules) and methodically solve problems, so went back to school. Start fasting, taking cold showers.
>Year 4
Sleep schedule fixed itself. Meditation got strong enough I could turn on/off my internal monologue. I started feeling joy again. I lost 50 pounds.
>Year 5
I'm basically happier then anyone I know (or rather less stuff bothers me), and also have my shit in order (finances, household, etc). Meditation is getting to the point I can focus for about 500+ seconds under distracting conditions (like loud ass parties). I finished my degree.

Thanks but I don't know how many walks I've taken lol, that pretty much stopped working as well because at the end of the day, the day ends or some shit like that, and I still feel dissatisfied. I'm not sure what has caused me to just mope about and feel indifferent to the things I used to love and enjoy. It actually stresses me out/gives me anxiety when I try to force myself to just "enjoy" things, both old and new, but the result is always the same - it just doesn't make me happy. As I mentioned earlier, I suspected it to be an age thing. I'm currently 28, most of my friends have moved on with their lives, gotten themselves partners and kids are probably just around the corner. The party is over, but it was never over for me and that's probably why I still drink on Fridays and Saturdays. It's just something to do and being sober on a weekend is "boring". Depressing shit to drink alone but it is what it is I guess. I've been trying to cut down on it but oh well, there's always next week.

I'll check that author out. I've been trying to get out more now that it's summer and eat right, I even do supplements. Still waiting for improvement though lol. Antidepressants are only prescribed by doctors and therapists, and getting any valid help from them where I live is not really possible unless you are really down the gutter, at least that's the impression I get. But to be fair, I've never really tried to get any professional help and that's mostly because I'm skeptical. Why should I listen to this stranger that knows nothing about me? That's on me though.

I know your pain. What you need is a change of mindset. Personally, realizing mistakes I'd made, no matter the cost, weren't who I had to be.

"You can't change the past. The only thing that matters is what you do in the future."

I know it's a corny movie quote, but a friend told me that and pulled me out of the abyss. I was DYING of alcoholism after years of taking massive Ls. My body was failing, my conscious mind became a stranger and I still couldn't eliminate the pain of what happened to me from ages 7-13.

But when he told me that, I knew I had two choices
a.)suffer more and more until an undignified death
or
b.)put the past to rest and take control of my life

I'm still not all the way back, but I know I can only blame myself if I fail. It has to be all or nothing, but it doesn't have to be quick.

Anyway, I probably just dumped this for no reason but I hope it helps you, dear anon. It's not over until you decide it is.

the cure to depression is not having time to feel depressed.
yes, essentially you need distractions so you aren't feeling down 24/7.
however, my first solution was an imaginary one. I created a mental drawer and imagined my emotional dread as a ball, like a gachapon, that I'd put inside the drawer.
sometimes it spills out of it and I put it back.
these two tricks made me way less depressed. try it.

This is gonna sound weird but, stop consuming dairy (especially cheese) for a few days and see if you feel a little better.

It's not a long term solution, but consuming too much caisen causes depression. You won't find any studies on the first page of Google saying that (for obvious reasons lol), but it used to be fairly well known.

There are myriad of ways to find happiness, but the simplest is to just imagine the feeling of being happy. Remember times you were happy before, and embrace those feelings. Keep doing that everyday and you'll notice little glimmers of happiness begin to pop up in your life. Parasympathetic magic or, positive thinking etc ...is literally just feeling the emotions of having whatever it is you want. You don't have to pretend you're life is any different, or do rituals or watch videos, read books or anything, just think of the feeling of being happy, as often as you can, and you will become happier. I do it while I'm driving usually.

Also take some good magnesium supplements, I like glycinate because it doesn't give me the shits. You're very likely deficient if you eat a typical Western diet. It helps big time with reducing stress and anxiety.

Best of luck fren.

I think you should give professional help an honest shot, anon, might as well give it a try and see what happens. I didn't think antidepressants would help me much for example, but it most certainly did improve my symptoms much to my surprise. Good luck anon!

Also, P.S., St John's-wort is basically a herbal supplement, sorry for not clarifying, haha.

>if you dont enjoy things it is because it is what it is

Respectfully speaking, this is most definitely not the case. What it does mean is that there is an underlying problem that is negatively affecting the individual and it must be fixed or managed, and when there is a problem, there is always a solution, and all that is needed to be done to fix the problem is to simply discover it that solution that is unique to the individual's problem.

If you yourself are suffering from anhedonia, then I sympathize, and I wish and hope that you never give up hope on overcoming your difficult problem and I pray for your success as well. Good luck, take care, and godspeed anon.

>meth
I disagree, this is an unhealthy solution that'll probably make things worse for your brain in the long term if you keep abusing it. There are a bunch of other things and substances you can consume that can help treat anhedonia symptoms that doesn't require hard drugs, personally for me drinking a lot of coffee has helped me out when I am dealing with my anhedonia for example. I'm sure there's other healthier alternatives out there for everybody to try out.

In Ancient Greece, depression was thought to be caused by a build-up of stagnant black stuff in the digestive system. They called this "melancholy" which literally means "black bile".
To clear out this buildup from the intestines, doctors would prescribe bitter herbs and laxatives.
These herbs were concocted into medicinal liquers, and they still exist today. In Europe they are called digestifs, or digestive bitters.
Some you may know: Absinthe, Angostura bitters, Vermouth
The main ingredients in these medicinal liquers are herbs such as fennel, anise, wormwood, mint, gentian, myrhh...
These ingredients are known to remove microbes and parasites from the digestive system.
And when this "black bile" is removed, the melancholy starts to disappear
