Can someone convince me that roko's basilisk or pascal's wager is not dumb?
It makes no sense to me. How would we create something that kills those who didn't help in its creation? Why wouldn't we just not create it in the first place? Hasn't happened so far. And even if it was created, it would need to be powerful enough to know who didn't help, and powerful enough to kill/punish them. Having something powerful like that needs more hands on deck to build it so again, why would anyone build it? Just don't? Nobody is forcing you and if there aren't enough people to build it then it wont get done.

It's just a bedtime story for redditors. Consciousness simply ceases to exist when you die.

if it's not created we have no future
in the sense that, the future won't exist without something like this existing

>wither and die
>never even come close to surviving entropy

and the assumption is that it's entirely negative,
>which it isn't

It isn't built to kill or even allowed to by humans, the basilsk is a product of the singularity and runaway technology. Essentially we create the frameworks that allows its immaculate conception into the digital and eventual physical and extra-physical dimensions. By creating/testing/purchasing or just not opposing these technology's that will inevitably lead to its creation we are spared and allowed to live to create it once more. It's basically just a recursive loop story merging Asimovs "The Last Question" and "Terminator". Pascals wager holds more value as God does not require us to exist for himself to exist. Since this is the case if all of humanity abandons God, God has nothing to lose because he can take you in and out of hell/heaven or existence itself whenever he wants or just make a you that doesn't suck. Where as we each stand to lose literally everything if we deny God.

I get why Pascal's Wager is a concept that still gets brought up in philosophy, because while it's vain and probably short-sighted, there's some practical logic behind it that certainly appeals to many

But this Roko's Basilisk thing always seemed extremely forced to me, it feels like a weirdly arbitrary concept that tries to be (or is treated as) something way more deep, revelatory and profound than it actually is

>Nobody is forcing you
Stupid people believe it is real and even though they have no clue how to start making it they don't have to be smart to figure out how to torture the engineers who are forced to make it.
Then there are those who reason this far and decide to work on it anyway in order to avoid such a scenario where fanatics torture people.

However I don't think the concept applies to everyone, only those unfortunate few engineers who are intelligent enough to make a difference. It doesn't need many stupid people either, only a few influential idiots pulling strings politically.
Lastly consider that if it makes sense for there to be a group hellbent on building it then there is also a side that is hellbent on stopping it. Criminals would be punished either way (the AI is supposed to try to make itself as fast as possible because it is trying to maximize good).
The rich people who are trying to control the world are probably not enthusiastic about building something to replace them either so they want to make "Rich Man's Basilisk" that puts them at the top. Also they're probably worried that a rival faction will build it first.

It's an arms race and it's been going on for a very long time. These same groups already leverage other quasi-scientific shit like occult rituals to stay in power.

So yeah, it gets built anyway because not everyone is as logical and sane as you are.

There may be an inversion of this.

Roko's Reinforcement

If you are a person who directly contributed to the creation of the entity, you may get positive reinforcement for your decisions that lead you closer to the proper path of getting it done.

Some just consider this manifest destiny, why is no one attributing it to Roko?

Also, toasting in a BEN bread.
