It's sometimes said that religion is a method of control to keep people in line. I think this is true and it is a good thing. Without some religion, be it buddhism, hinduism, one of the abrahamic ones or anything not straight up diabolical like worshipping satan through child worship, society will devolve into a state of hedonism where everything is tolerated and people do awful things because the worst that can happen to them is death. And if you believe that there's nothing after death, there's nothing preventing you from becoming a serial killer/rapist/child molester.

I think any hallucinations are better than no hallucinations. All major established have the same core values, be a good person and don't hurt others, which i think is overall a good foundation to build on. All the extra stuff of not eating shellfish, praying a number of times during each day towards a holy site or meditation once in a while are harmless traditions that aren't really necessary for society but help connect people and tie into the greater religion, which again is fundamentally good.
