Part 1

I live on a pleasant and quaint street one block before a cul-de-sac to my west.
Across the street to my east, two houses down lives a family. They are very friendly and personable.
They own the two empty houses on the same side of the street to their west, the largest house being directly across the street from me.
Neither of the two empty houses owned by this family are on the market for rent or for sale.
The patriarch of this family is a respected and trusted basketball coach for the local high school.
The woman of the house runs a credentialed daycare center out of the house that they live in.
The house that the family lives in is a ranch style 3 bedroom house. The empty house next to theirs, the house that they also own, is about the same size and has a two car garage.
And the 2nd house they own is a large pink two story house with a distressed appearance.
I have lived here for 6 months and have noticed a few oddities about the housing situation across the street. I was was told when I was looking to purchase my home last summer that the big two story house was eventually going to be turned into a day care center.
In all that time I have seen no serious renovations being done to the place, which it badly needs.
However, I have noticed during the time that I've lived here that almost every night, the basement lights are on through its opaque windows. These lights stay all on......all.....night.....long.
And I'm talking every night for months. I have never seen lights on through windows of the first or second floor and I have never heard any sounds coming from the house either.

In the house with the 2 car garage, between where the family actually lives and the big two story house, there is always a new white Ford Transit van parked in the driveway. It's never parked in either garage, nor have I ever seen these garage doors open.

Part 2

In addition, I have never seen anyone go into this house, although I have seen the couple that owns the three places go into the two story house once or twice.

Also, I have never seen any kids dropped off at the house where the woman supposedly runs a day care center, nor have I ever heard any children playing.

Also, there is a handyman who lives next to me who apparently does little and odds and ends repairs for the family, but I have never seen him go into either house.
None of the work he ever does seems productive. One time I watched the handyman sitting on a stack of perfectly good bricks in the driveway of the two car garage, busting up said bricks with a jackhammer one at a time, for reasons I cannot fathom.

I just cannot comprehend why would anybody would want to purchase two other large houses on the same street that they live on and do absolutely nothing to improve the properties or get them into a marketable state. I mean............it has been several months now.

Does anybody have any theories as to what might be going on?
To me, it's just too strange of a mystery to not crowd source this.

As I see it, jackhammering the bricks could have been to keep a lookout and provide cover sound. Alternatively they could be using them for something (mixing into soil to taint it to hide something? I don't know.)

The general idea that AI went on is their house is the cover, the house with trucks is the staging area (with the garage being used for something else; white truck is nondescript and often used in ops) and the decaying house is the black site.
