What do you guys think of the "satanic verses" in the Quran?

Apparently Muhammad initially recited some verses that said certain idols are ok, and then Gabriel had to correct him and say "I didn't tell you that, that came from Satan" and Muhammad had to remove it. The earliest references of this story are from multiple Muslim historians from about 200-300 years after Muhammad's death, including al-Wāqidī, Ibn Sa'd and the tafsir of al-Tabarī.

The problem is, rather than accept that no prophet is welcome in his home town, he compromised with the local idols in order to win over Mecca. That's a no-no.

1 Kings 13 is a story about failed prophets like Muhammad who fail to overcome their own egoic nature.
