The internal monologue has a automatic and manual way of using the brain to form language, the former being which is how you can adopt a language just like when you were a child by trying to speak even tough you don't know the words. The second being a subject based dialogue tied to worldview and memories.
If you do drugs any programming relying on the second will be returning to automatic rather then any following hymn related to your subject due to stress beating coherency. Automatic responses are what drives insane people nuts because it will always conflict with your imagined worldview due to being internal rather then external and most people forgot that they had that same ability in the past.

If you are deem being awake as positive and asleep as negative then being manual is reserved for waking yourself up and the latter to bring yourself to sleep.
