I want to learn magic or spells or curses or thaumaturgy. Are they real. I assume they are but I really don't know where I would start. Specifically I just want to turn some positive karma my way, I want to try and use all that I can to do better in my life.

That's what I'd like to know, too. Answers evade me by simply asking questions, people are fidgety about exactly how far magic can go. I'm left to just experiment and see what I can do.

/omg/ has some suggestions to start with. I'm no good at recommending for beginners, I jumped off the deep end when I started reading. Best I can recommend are
>Six Ways by Aidan Wachter
>Advanced Magick for Beginners by Alan Chapman
>Psychic Witch by Mat Auryn

It's not only about having spells, but also knowing how to make and cast them.

Go to wizardforums.com, have some magical conversations, borrow some books, and start at the beginning! Everyone sucks at first it's a steep learning curve. If you're going to do Thaumaturgy, then you're going to have to deal with and slog through pedantic Neo-Platonism eventually. And that means working with Classical Sources, which means dealing with "Pagan" Philosophy, even if it's in a "Christian" form! The popular idea of a wizard is someone who reads a lot of books, and that's mostly true! ;~)

They are real, but the most important thing and reason people don't develop them is the lack of spiritual stability. If you don't have it, you may start causing the so called "poltergeist effect" accidentally and loathe/fear your powers
It all comes from manifestation/believing/mind energy, but finding a system you like might help give it a ground. Just stay away from anything that requires summoning or calling entities
