How did they coincide so well?
I always thought these movies and sometimes video games contained demonstrations of real life secret military weaponry.

The gluon gun from Half-Life is a reference to the proton pack from Ghostbusters, which came out 14 years prior. The files in the game even refer to it as weapon_egon, as in Egon Spengler, from Ghostbusters. There are a shit ton of references to older sci-fi in Half-Life, and The Matrix isn't terribly original either.

They don't "coincide so well" they're literally made decades apart. If you see something repeatedly, odds are it's a reference/rip-off of something that came out earlier.
