They have a very authoritative social system which prohibits directness and prohibits challenging authority for the sake of more social cohesion.
But this is natural because Japan is an island with a lot of natural disasters, so people need to get along and work together efficiently.
You cant easily escape from an island so when you are feudal warlord and the tokugawa shogunate captures your whole family, you shut up and be a nice vassal so you can see them once a year.
