Is this the way? I like that it seems to try to come to truth through reason instead of just citing scripture and alleged divine revelation.

It goes beyond reason, because awareness is more fundamental than mind.

Advaita is not the complete truth, but it is an important step on the path to the truth.

It literally came about because they wanted to do Buddhism but still cite the Vedas.

Budhism and anything related to India is retarded. One of the most defeatist religions ever.

>Suffering comes from desires so basically just stop desiring and caring.
Wow, so deep. Even below desert death cults (aka Abrahamic religions).

I think Ramakrishna gets it right. The correct understanding of the Upanidhads, and Vedanta, is that Saguna Brahman and Nirguna Brahman are both divine. One is not greater than the other. Nor is Saguna Brahman an illusion. Illusion is something we project upon Saguna Brahman.

I have also studied Shankaracharyas famed commentary on the Gita, and they seem forced interpretations.

Not that I don't think Advaita is a valid perspective, it is, but it is not the bigger picture of the Upanishads IMO.

Nirguna Brahman is General-Being, Saguna Brahman is Specific-Being.

Specific-Being emanates from General-Being, and is thus dependent on it.

Nope, that's not the idea. The idea is suffering comes from gratifying one's senses alone. One needs to actively get God involved... Desire is part of the mind so, it's impossible to not have desire. Instead, it's said one should know one's position isn't the owner of the senses and offer their "work" (things they do/who they are, in general) to God. That way you're not feeling "bad" about desires/sense gratification since it's all an offering to God. Eventually, the desire to take part in those sense-gratificatory activities start to go away and you're left with transcendental knowledge of the self and one's true position as eternal servitor of God.

our own mythology) was usurped by the jews and replaced

tolkien tried his best to revive it, to appeal to the white man's spirit. by contrast, the bible is boring, sandy, and obsessed with navel-gazing jewish ancestry and laws.

the white man longs for the trees, for colourful gods, and heroic mythology, mixed with stoic philosophy. imagine what a fully-fledged white religion would have looked like if it had been allowed to develop over 2000 years like other religions.

You can still desire and suffer. It is a matter of choice. I desire, thus I suffer. I endure and overcome the suffering, my desire evolves. This builds character.
Those who avoid desire, in order to avoid suffering, are just running away from themselves.

my gripe with advaita is all the talk about atman being the same as brahman. you have multiple people that recognize this fact but this is self-defeating. if someone says you are god, you're deluding people into thinking that you are some sort of godly being when you're still as human as everyone else. you can't say you are god but address this fact to everyone. if I were god, I would have the ability to do anything I want but that isn't the case.
