What is summoning? What is it in essence? What is the purpose? Why is it considered forbidden magic?

You're basically summoning something from thin air, from nothing. That's probably why it's so forbidden, where did whatever you just summoned come from exactly? Is it really smart to mess with things from some other side that shouldn't belong here in the first place? Who really knows, but sure is interesting.
