Yes, you gain knowledge and on the other hand you loose your one ability to think rational. Confusion is part of this system. You get an amount of cryptic input, till your straight thinking goes bonkers. And you get some knowledge, that is impressing from time to time to keep you going.
And you need to input so much time and will, that at some point, you can't go back, because it would make your whole life seem pointless. I think this is mostly dark magic.
