>>40743496>The coke with actual sugar in it tastes far better than the shit made with corn syrup.This.
This is actually /pol/ but I'm bored.
The story of High Fructose Corn Syrup goes back over a hundred years.
1) Cane sugar can only be grown in Florida (and later Hawaii) in the United States.
2) Because of the limited growing areas (in the US) the Cane Growers formed a monopoly / consortium / guild to artificially jack up the price. They kept it high like this for DECADES.
3) They also used their obscene profits to "lobby" Congress to put tariffs on foreign cane sugar.
4) The cane sugar high prices / tariffs made other businesses look for alternatives to overpriced cane sugar
5) They eventually came up with beet sugar, and then later HFCS, which is actually hyrdolized + fermented from the parts of the corn that is thrown away.
6) BUT cane sugar actually does taste better, and people have started "importing" coke made in Mexico with cane sugar (which has no tariff).
7) Considering that generic soda costs $1.25 / 2Ltr while Coke costs $2.50 / 2Ltr the added cost of importing the Mexican (cane sugar coke) is negligible.
All Trump is doing is persuading Coke to go back to using the original cane sugar recipe made with real AMERICAN cane sugar. The cane sugar monopoly is still there but they don't have nearly the same political power they had 100 years ago with so many alternatives available now.
