Now they try to tell us that he never did that, he never showed up with big checks, or that he worked for American Family Publishers.

We all know it's bullshit and today I came across picrel while reading the book The Late Shift by Bill Carter. These are my own pictures from a book published in 1994.

Check it out

if i remember correctly it was about selling magazine subscriptions. the whole "maybe ed mcmahon will show up with a million dollars" trope was more popular than people fantasizing about the lottery. PCH also filled your mailbox with junk mail with his dumb face on it. not the same as the wwe guy tho. ed was johnny carsons sidekick on the tonight show. He had a bid course laugh and thats about it.

Growing up very poor in the 90s, this was how I always fantasized about becoming rich. I couldn't play the lottery or anything yet, so I would imagine what it would be like for Ed McMahon to show up with a giant check and a film crew. It's so obviously wrong to me to hear that he didn't do it. Like nigger, I saw him do it and daydreamed about him coming to my house so I could buy pokemon cards like the other kids at my school.

Sounds like they were just kind of 'testing the waters' to see what they could get away with, without getting flagged by financial regulators.
That, or they were already getting away with much more financial trickery that this was just something done out of past time boredom.

Yeah i vividly remember being a kid and filling out the paperwork for this several times, really hoping it would be the time my family won a million dollars.
Ed McMahon himself would show up with a giant check. "You've just won a million dollars through the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes!" in that very unique signature voice.
Fuck CERN and whatever they're doing to keep making us switch timeliness

For what it's worth I remember seeing commercials with the guy bringing big checks to houses. I'm an older zoomer if it matters
