Most traditions/customs on a spiritual level takes place on an oral level, passen on by practice and such.

Give it a 40 years, and the religion will be so deformed from when it was first implemented, it is a common sight.

To those who read the bible, it is a simple thing to understand. Covering the departed with blood shows a high similarity with the saying: "We are covered in the blood of Christ." Meaning our sins are covered by His righteouness.

Corrupt priests, corrupt kings, and the common people who lack a proper knowledge of religion are the reason why religion departs from the right path.

Here's my theory.
1. People brought food animals to powerful people as tribute and/or payment for protection, rent, etc.
2. People thought gods would want similar treatment, so started sacrificing animals. (To my understanding benevolent gods don't want that, but Aphrodite likes votive offerings.)
3. ln times of resource shortage, you don't have animals, and you also have too many people to feed, so guess what happens now.
