Consciousness comes from the microbial world. We are all part of a fungal network that has been alive for millions of years. This fungal hivemind watches over the actions of every living creature and decides whether we reincarnate on a higher or lower level. People born via c-section and in extremely sterile environments are more prone to possession by evil fungi. There have been creatures in the past (We call them aliens) who have escaped this cycle and currently live off planet in completely sterile environments. The only way to escape this cycle is extreme heat which kills the fungus and its spores.
