The universe is expanding at an accelerating rate due to dark energy, a mysterious force that makes up about 68% of the cosmos. Dark energy is just bigger sound waves, in essence

When you listen to music, the sound waves are physical objects flying through the air that possess mass and thusly their own gravitation

So, the missing matter from galaxies being labeled as "Dark Matter", is likely simply the record player galaxy itself channeling that "missing" mass up into up a higher emergence layer, like sound waves only exist while there is a cloud of air particles to surf upon.
Well once there is a cloud of air particles, why WOULDN'T you surf on it?
With billions of smaller particle like stars, moons, planets, asteroids, physical mass can then travel interconnected in between them in a new, larger, emergent magnetic field, that we call differing names at different plank emergence levels

The expansion is simply digging holes out of the sandbox, shaping that sand into a cool new complex shaped part, and then gently nudging it back into place

The expansion occurs when the universes matter is in a state of nothing but 100% photons (bar magnets) that do possess mass, but do not exert gravitation onto one another because they are bar magnet shapes.
When the Universe is 100% photons, the emergent magnetic field from their combined total, changes and fluctuates like mad because they are going whatever way outwards expanding as particles do

If two photons get close enough together, they form a new singular shape with a new magnetic field that does then both get pulled, as well as pull.
And the magnetic field from the combined total of the entire universes parts working together as a higher sound wave like emergence, then changes shape into one that would appear collapsing

This balancing ratio bounces back and forth, between the two states as the amount of photon to non photon state occurs.

Expands out, dig out the sand, make complex parts from the stellar factories, move the parts back

When the universe becomes more "other" than photons it pulls back inwards again
But the big crunch should be gentle because of all the parts the universe built that will act like a spring and absorb the bouncing

Basically our universe has X amount of building block pieces in it

It’s a miscalculation. Up until recently space was assumed to be totally smooth. But galaxies and voids affect gravity and the rate of time differently. New calculations were performed that considered these differences, and it accounts for the missing variables dark energy and dark matter were made up to account for.
Basically, they don’t exist. They were the result of computational limitations. For more info look up non-homogenous universe.
