All i can give is my own personal advice other people probably had success in their own ways and probably better than me too. But here’s what I did.

Research PF tech like an autist. You can do this while you wait for your spores to arrive. I also suggest purchasing pre-sterilized jars.

Ur gonna learn a ton the first time u grow them but if u are autistic enough u will have success for sure ur first time and learn a bunch.

Mushrooms are NOT plants. It’s a whole different kinda organism to learn about. Id say thats the number one problem i see…

FAE + humidity is probably the most important thing the mush love Fresh Air Exchange and 100% humidity.

So the hard part is to maintain 100% humidity without letting the air go stale.

To accomplish this i just baby the hell out of my mush. Open the lid and air it out get the fresh air flowing in there and then spritzing like crazy with fine mister and close the lid back up.

Research chemicals are better. 4-HO-MiPT and 4-HO-MET are orders of magnitude better than psilocybin. 4-HO-MiPT is like a less emotional, more logical, more alien form of shrooms with more auditory hallucinations and sexual effects. 4-HO-MET is a lighter, party version of shrooms that makes everything funny and makes everything look bright and marshmallowy.

To elaborate i believe at this point the medium is very firmly established by the mycelium and its not easy for contams to take over.

At lest for me using the cakes and my personal situation I mostly ran into issues with not enough FAE leading to soggy conditions and the mush didn't want to grow nice and tall.

The less FAE the more likely i was to see weird growth heading downwards and things like mushrooms trying to spawn on the top of another mushroom and so forth.

This is all my own personal experience so im surprised to hear u had such a different experience with leaving it alone.

Im guessing u are doing a different type of substrate and maybe ur setup is different than mine.

You don't need vermiculite or gypsium. It has a *degree* of effect on flushes but unless you are getting into commerical growing it's not that important. As long as you mist well and your mycellium is a large enough mass you will get large flushes without either vermiculite or gypsium. This is not even getting into multi-spore or clones.
