Theurgy and Thaumaturgy; inseparable accentuations of the other
Theurgy is a "higher" form of magic focused on invoking divine power to unite with or elevate the self, while thaumaturgy is a "lower" form or a more practical branch focused on manipulating the physical world through one's will or occult knowledge. The perceived "lesser" status depends on the context and goal: theurgy is generally more spiritually complex and focused on internal transformation, whereas thaumaturgy is more concerned with demonstrable, tangible changes in the external world.
As it is, as above and so below, forward and back, thaumaturgy is bolstered or accentuated by theurgy. It will come of it. To invoke the very godliness that gave you your power is grand indeed.
Putting it another way, theurgy is directed at changing the magician, thaumaturgy is directed at changing the world.
For one to become a greater thaumaturge, one must also become a greater theurge. It is alchemy. The refinement of the self, the very soul. Hermetic lore and principle would tell you that “alchemy is the key”.
