/cg/ - Climbing General
~~Hangboarding Edition~~

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.

>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.

>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

Here are some useful resources for sizing:

>Do I need Magdust/Rugne Gear?
No, most chalk you find will be good. Mammut is older, cheaper, and as reliable as they come.

>Do I need to start hangboarding?
Hangboarding is a tool used to improve climbing, but you likely won't *need* it until you've climbed for 2-3 years. Even that's generous. Just climb.

HEMA or Kenjutsu for nerds who like to simulate historical techniques. Fencing or Kendo for the athletes that want to excel in competition.

I'm team nerd in this subject. Swords aren't even viable weapons anymore, so keeping history alive is more important to me than winning.

/jsa/ Japanese sword arts general the importance of defeat edition
A thread to discuss Japanese weapon based martial arts and our own martial journey with like minded people, discussion of other Asian systems is welcomed too.

>what is kendo?
Kendo is a modern Japanese budō that uses shinai (bamboo sword) and armor for combat, in its modern purpose is a way to strengthen body and spirit and develop character.

>is kendo a martial art?
Kinda

>what do I need to start kendo?
A shirt and sweat pants your club will likely borrow you the rest when you start

>what is iaido?
Is a Japanese martial art, influenced by zen practices based on different kata (drills) and subdivided in different schools with solo drills based on drawing the sword from the scabbard to defend from an imaginary opponent.

>what is kenjutsu?
Is a old form of Japanese budō based on the use of various weapons as they were used back in the day by the samurai, depending on ryūha you can have various way of teaching, weapons, presence or lack of sparring and time/place of origin.

>what do I need to start kenjutsu/iaido?
Sweat pants and a shirt again, depending on club ryūha you may be required to buy additional equipment but at the very start you don’t need anything.

> What are the excellent value brands?
Marin, Commencal, Canyon, Polygon, YT, Propain, Kona, and many more. Sometimes the expensive brands have an excellent alue bike

XC bikes are for going up fast, go down not as fast. Trail bikes are for going up and down. Enduro bikes are for going down fast, and slower up. Downhill bikes are for going down really fast, needs a ski lift, truck, or the rider pushing it to go up.

Discord Channel: https://discord.gg/8Vw9d7j

What to look for in a martial arts gym:
>Physically conditioned, fit participants
>Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully
>Sparring, "aliveness" in training
>At least one participant competes at amateur or professional level
>Clean facility with mats that are frequently sanitized

What to be wary of:
>Fat, physically subpar students
>Graduation fees (e.g. "pay $200 and advance to next belt extra quick!")
>No proven athletes training there
>No sparring, moves shown are choreographed (e.g. "the attacker does this, then I do this, then you do this...")
>Cult-like atmosphere
>long mandatory contracts with hefty fees for breaking

Ultimate Self-Defense Championship Season 2
First episode is out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCsR-zxwN1Y
>What is the Ultimate Self-Defense Championship?
A bit over a year ago, former Aikidoka YouTuber Rokas Leo set up a tournament with a self-defense "academy" to have himself and five other martial arts YouTubers compete to see who is best at self-defense. It was a hilarious shitshow that nearly crippled one of the contestants, Ramsey Dewey who would later get into an internet spat with the guy behind the academy (Jeff Phillips) and described the entire event as "piss poor" due to poor management, an incoherent and arbitrary scoring system, running on a very limited schedule, and timing events terribly (like having a zombie apocalypse-themed event that didn't influence score in the middle of the entire thing instead of at the end or something) and doing comically dangerous shit like making people fight on a narrow bridge a good 30ft above the ground.
Somehow, he kickstarted a second one, which features even less martial arts YouTubers.

Marathon but you can sabotage your opponents any way you want. Weapons allowed. Basically the Road Rash game but on foot.

Dodgeball with bocce.

Polo but with rodeo horses.

Water polo but the water is slightly acidic so your skin and eyes start to burn after a while and you can only get out (rotating with other team members) once you score.

Any motor sport but without brakes.

Soccer with bowling balls.

Squash but the room is so narrow and you can get hit by the other player's racket.

Basketball but the court is oiled.

Make skateboarding cozy but get real fucking good
To where you can go to a competition real nervous but ignore the hype and perform better than anyone else because you practiced extensively

Balin Miller, 23, died in a climbing accident Wednesday
A popular Alaskan climber fell to his death from Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan, marking the third death in the park this summer.

Balin Miller, 23, died in a climbing accident Wednesday, his mother Jeanine Girard-Moorman confirmed.

“He’s been climbing since he was a young boy,” she said. “His heart and soul was truly to just climb. He loved to climb and it was never about money and fame.”

Most places will ask u to use 16 oz gloves for sparring. Everlasts are fine but Windy, Fairtex, Twins, Yokkao, and if ur sugar daddy is paying for gloves, Winning gloves are all better choices. The first 4 I listed are easily found in new/used condition on fboo...

Skydiving General
Want to participate in one of the most ultimate extreme sports? Come Skydive.

Either do a tandem for ~S220 (Don't get video you will watch it once or twice and it costs $120+) or go through AFF and jump with your own gear every jump ($~3600 for the first 8 jumps or so) Most jumps are $60-70 after that if renting gear, or ~$30 if you have your own.

Any questions? Ask away I'm an insutructor

Yeah, we're at like 80-90% of deaths in the last 10 years or so being under a fully inflated properly function canopy that the pilot made a bad mistake with (Swoop, low turn, canopy collision, hitting a building)

they estimated one year each skydive was like 22 miles driven on a motorcycle on the highway in terms of risk
>>238315
I had my first jump last week (it was exhilarating, would recommend) and I was talking to my tandem master along with another experienced jumper about the AAD on the truck ride to the plane, and they said one dude they knew died because he passed out on a jump despite the AAD opening. That'...

>>238407
I would estimate each skydive to be ~20 mins of potentially dangerous activity (with 15 mins of it being the ride up, which is significantly lower risk profile, but not 0).
So a good comparison would be based on the likelihood of injury or death in 1000 jumps (20000mins=333hours of skydivin...

why don't more people skate with bigger wheels? I'm talking 60mm and above.
it feels so much better to skate when you're not trying to balance precariously on little tiny baby wheels, where even a speck of dust will send you flying.

Mtb, downhill
Hello everybody . So like a 6 months ago my old "friend" begged me to lent my dh mtb to his friend, and I told it would be a good idea to strengthen our friendship. with some hesitation I lent it to them the next day. Shortly after 2 days they returned everything was fine, and than they begged me to lent them bike again because his friends bike was broken, and we decided to store it at my basement. Than 1,2 days after they took that broken bike out of basement and sold it. And then begged to lent my dh Bike again for 4 days, because "I don't need I'm not riding that much" well yes I was preparing for exams. I said like ok but not for more days, my parents didn't knew that I lent it. Than passed like 2,3 weeks of me literally begging them to return it, also my "old friend" was my classmate so I was questioning him every day, and he replied : it's not my problem you lent bike to him not to me. I can write even more in details what happend but it would be long if anyone interested in. After 3 weeks of me begging them they returned me it, transmission destroyed, and every bearing was with rusty water. As an excuse for what they did, they said that I abandoned my friend when we were 13 years old in the forest, and it was telling his friend who wasn't even at the moment it happend, basically imagine the start of small local forest near city where many people hanging out, and we left him in close to exit area waiting for him like literally a wide trail that goes only in one way, as result he walked out with bike only with some mud stains on shirt. And that was an excuse, ok but then they told that they found buyer for my cycle, but they will be selling it without me without my supervision because they told everybody that it's their cycle. I declined it and then they threatened me that they won't give back my tools that I lent them earlier. At this point I told my parents about it, and I got my tools back, and it's not the end of the story. It is too long.

Skiing
Hey /xs/, absolute tourist here, do you guys ever discuss skiing or have a skiing general? I see another thread on cross country, but I'm thinking more alpine or freestyle.

Bit early in October, but I'm looking forward to this season, hoping I'm well enough to go.

funny enough, Oleksander Usyk is now the lineal UFC heavyweight champ, since Fury (barely) beat Ngannou then Usyk beat Fury twice.
so i guess Usyk's gotta go to the UFC once he's done boxing
