Am I missing something or does the 3d community seem to be very checkered on sharing?
Sure theres the easy stuff to get like open3dlab, SFMlab, Smutbase, some good stuff at sketchfab, and if you want something decent on Itch or Gumroad you have to already have found a good modeler in mind to find their stuff
Not to mention sometimes you can find models in animations or youtube with next to no credit so its near impossible to find sometimes, I get if its your own model you'd want to have private ownership but 8/10 times thats not the case

This could've gone in the dumb questions thread. You just want free models, without putting in work or money

Assuming you use Blender, there are lots of assets on BlenderKit.
Most models are comedically unoptimized though so be ready to decimate them, and some shaders are intensive due to many procedural parts.
There are also some addons on Blender Market, but almost anything you'd want isn't free.
I'd suggest keeping an eye out for if they do a 'Best of 2025' bundle on HumbleBundle. If it's like the 2024 one, you can get a good variety of addons for ~£25, including some asset packs, among other stuff, that would cost over £1,000 separately, which is basically free in my eyes.
Scouring for finished scenes (on reddit, blenderartists, wherever...) that you can download and rip assets from may also be good, though crediting may get tricky if you share stuff online and care about that.
Hope that helps.

The only people who are fags about sharing are the CAD community. For pretty much anything else, any game modding community alone are proof that free shit isn't in short supply.

Anyone in the industry knows that basemeshes are standard practice.
