Realistically where do I get "connections' from?
Do I need to hit it off with someone? Where and how?
Do I need to change my personality? Do I need charisma? Apparently instead of being good at the job, I also need to learn social skills to an extent I don't know
I have never been in a professional environment besides college.
How do I even initiate things like these?

Can't help you. I went to college and made a friend during orientation because they separated us into groups of 4 to socialise. This guy introduced me to two other dudes later. These are the only friends I have because I only went there in person for exams. Making connections is for normal people.
