Hey /3/
I want to retopo this model. I work in 3ds Max and found it to be lacking.

Are there any tools that would allow me to "relax" and curve some of the topology? I want to keep working on Mesh, but I also wish I had a smoother shape.

Or should I move entirely towards different software?

ugh i hate these fake threads!
the topo on this thing is 100% perfect. you just wanted to make a thread where people would be freaked out by a screen shot of a sex toy model you found.
we could atually be talking about dildo design but NOOOOOO youre here to troll and not discuss.

Dude, yes, I posed this with a dildo as I was commissioned to make 10 models. The topo isn't perfect, or at least not to the level I want to achieve.

Im looking for a way to smoothen the loops as myne always look jittery and Im really looking for a way to handle it without eyeballing it.

the problem is in your imagination. hit smooth.
Anonymous No.1011763 [Report]
you can relax the topology in blender's sculpt mode using the slide relax brush. no idea about 3ds max
Nignug No.1011766 [Report] >>1011908
I dont mean to just "Relax-relax" I want to have the Curvability. Also I would like to be able to traighten a loop along the model as I would be slicing through it.

Now I feel like my models are always a bit jittery.

1. use swift loops
2. use set flow to smooth loop edges that were fucked without flattening curvatures
3. use loop tools to average the curvature and spacing or completely straighten edges in certain cases that would otherwise get messed up by set-flow
4. for following a complex spline curve precisely i'd try sweep then boolean to cut. You'd have to clean up the result but at least it would be precise. Otherwise tracing the loop by hand is close enough and no one is ever going to notice except you.
5. If you need to reform a curve along it's normal facing just make a proxy curve mesh with turbosmooth and use freeform conform after putting it in place. My tolerance for that preciseness probably isn't the same since I don't care as much, but I've never had any issues that Max couldn't solve.
In short it sounds like you have a skill issue and it's probably not Max.

since you're a maxbro and you asked nicely, 3ds max have the exact tool for this. its called flow connect. just delete the whole loop, select the ring of the original loop, and click flow connect. it will automatically create a smooth loop based on the surrounding curvature.

and yes, i've check, there's no other tools similar to this on blender or maya.

3dsmax gods stay winning.

Strange flex since you can often find some variation of this in a lot of third party plugins in any software. But actually the vanilla blender "subdivide" edit mode operation (I don't think it's a very good name since it's most often used as a "new edge loop" operation) has a "smoothness" option that does the same thing:
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/3.6/modeling/meshes/editing/edge/subdivide.html#options
I never used maya but it probably has something like that as well. It's just hard to find all the functionality from just the docs because 3d modeling software is so packed with features.
Anonymous No.1012653 [Report] >>1012656 >>1012817
>>1012646
blender's "subdivide" is similar but not quite the same. there's something non-optimal about the algorithm compared to max. here's a default sphere with subdivide with smoothness turn on. you can see the new edges are wonky.
Anonymous No.1012655 [Report]
>>1012646
you can even see it in the official example
Anonymous No.1012656 [Report] >>1012817
>>1012653
Hmm, you're right, it is suboptimal. Might still be good enough for a lot of usecases. But I yield.
I wonder if the wonkiness could be alleviated by manually inputting a higher value for the smoothness. The dialog normally lets you slide between 0.0-1.0, but you can enter a higher value.

To me it looks like dissolve edges. Am I seeing it wrong? To select edges like that in Blender you can [ctrl + left click], to then dissolve them you do [ctrl + x].

Woops it's [alt + left click]

Thank you!
Set flow seems to be working most of the time, but Im pretty bummed I cant get to make it look as if I was using some sort of "Lazylane"

>>1012644
I'm pleasantly surprised by your words. Thanks for the tips. I think I never used Flow Connect, is that similar to "Swift Loop + Shift" ?

In my image, Im showing what I find myself having trouble with, equal distribution, and the wonkyness is persistent.

I know the model is fine, I want to make it better as practice.

it's the exact opposite of dissolve edges. dissolve will collapse the edges and bridge the border linearly. flow connect takes a ring of edges, and create an edge loop that blends the border curvature.
Anonymous No.1012679 [Report] >>1012688
>>1012667
yeah swift loop+shift is the same. i just find it easier to select every other alternating edge loops, dissolve them, convert selection to rings, and click flow connect. so it will blend them all in one go insted of manually slicing one by one

So it's the same as creating edge loop and manually scaling it down a little bit?

also check out this section from the Max Graphite tool help. there's more tools to help niche use cases. ive highlighted some that might be useful.

Blender can do this with LoopTools > Curve or Edge Flow > Set Flow.

- In LoopTools, select the loops you don't want to move.
https://youtu.be/goJ4LVHXkC4?t=346
- In Edge Flow, you select the edges you want to modify. There's also a Set Linear that's handy.

yeah. definitely recommended to read through max graphite toolkit documentation. you'll get some "holy shit, that's neat" moment. max graphite got a lot of tools for extremely specific and niche use cases.

the toolkit is so extensive it's insane, almost to the point of """bloat"", that you have no idea what to do with it, UNTIL YOU DO look for it.

if you hang out on 3dsmax official forum (comfy forum btw), the devs are always eager to hear and implement your ideas for new tools, no matter how obscure it is. alot of the tools idea came from the forum.

compare that to blender forum, if you ask for an obscure idea, you'll either get an "NIH syndrome" answer, an "XYZ syndrome" answer (like in >>1012709), or the best case scenario is when someone will point out some github project for a plugin.

for me, i rather have a standard, built-in ""bloated""" toolkit to cover all possible use cases that works, instead of installing dozens of plugins that doesn't always work.

3dsmax GODS stay winning, again.
