I have less than 1 week to make a character from nothing. I can't waste time on bad stuff. I don't really know what I'm doing. I don't know what the community considers good or not. I've found like a dozen that look good but idk which one to start with, I don't have time to try them all out! Please post your favorite tutorials, most helpful, most useful, most amazing tutorials. Will be starting one today at random if no good answers.

You need to find a reference sheet of the same character from from and side perspective,
import it into the scene "image as planes" way,
then you start from box, do loop cuts and adjust polygons to this reference image in background (basically the same as "tracing" in drawing)
first do front perspective then switch between front and side perspective repeateadly and adjust
45 degree stuff you just do intiuitively without tracing, it all takes practice.
I couldn't find the tutorial that introduced me to this personally, but here is a video where the same tracing technique is used:

And you chose to make a low poly character because you think it's easier? Don't, idiot.

Yes! I've skimmed through a number of videos and everyone seems to start with this front and side view of a character, then they sculpt the stuff from that reference. Unfortunately I'm really new to 3D. I want something that's more hand holding. Stuff like the video you linked looks just like magic. Also I think low poly stuff would be easier.
Currently thinking these look good:

Low-ISH poly! I know trying to emulate the actual old stuff is not easy! I mean stuff like "Head is le Cube, hair is le Triangel"! Also I don't think texturing anything is realistic for me. I learned how to apply a material to the donut and that's what I plan to use on my character. UV mapping and all that seems unrealistic to learn in a week.

Ever see the models from like, the original mgs game? Everything is basically boxes, the only trick is the joints. Then just watch "riging for impatient people" and you'll be done in like, four hours

Indeed it does look like Snake is made of like 8 cuboids max. But the texture work in that really makes it look great! It is heartening to know this stuff can be done in 4 hours lmao. I don't need to rig it just yet. If I have an unrigged model by the end of this week i will be happy!

Maybe not easier to make something that looks nice, but it's definitely one of the least time-consuming styles.

For anyone who wanted to watch the video referenced in OP. Though its not for beginners since its a 256fes challenge

Look up places like sketchfab for low poly models of characters, press 5 for wireframe and see how they do it.

I do consider myself a low poly character artist.

I recorded a timelapse of my workflow from concept up to rendering the animation.

My advice if you have 2D skills would be to draw the reference as pixel art.
It really helps if you want to make low poly and you're a newbie.

If you lack 2D skills, my advice is to try to copy a character ortho reference (google things like character blueprints, or pirate a T posed model from a videogame ripped model or a Vroid generated model) and then try to draw the topology using Krita polygon tools, try to redraw the model similar to low poly using the line and square tools.

It really simplify your mental task if you can draw the topology first in Krita.

If you can't even draw your reference, try to like get an N64 model from a game like mario 64, and then put on Edit mode, take a screenshot and then use that in front and side view (literally just trace it) as reference on Krita.

Cris, I give you alot shit, but the fact you actually have a full process with video evidence of it, as well as having a fairly consistent upload schedule, is actually impressive
