I'm digging around E33's models in the hopes of 3D printing Lune. I've already done this in other games with other models, so I'm familiar with making the models manifold, breaking them into parts that come together seamlessly, etc. I struggle with getting the characters to pose, and that's what I'm going to talk about here.

Files were extracted with FModel. You can get the unreal asset map on nexusmods right now. Game was made in Unreal 5.4. I'm editing in Blender, and I imported the .pskx and .psa with blender's native extension.

You can find the skeleton in the files at Sandfall/Content/Characters/Heros/Lune/SK_Lune_Placeholder.uasset
and the animation is at Sandfall/Content/Characters/Heros/Lune/Animations/BattleTurn/Lune_Idle_Base.uasset
for those who want to follow along.

I think the problem relates to the armature that comes with the skeleton in the .pskx, so I guess it's time to learn everything I can about armatures and posing models.

In the first pic, you can see some deformation in her left arm. Here's another example in the foot, related to toes. Also note that bones appear to be pointed in the same direction as normals. In this pic, the left foot, I left the bones as default.

In this pic, the right foot, I first aligned the bones with the toes, then applied the animation. The bones immediately realigned facing normals but downwards. I suppose because they were closer to the bottom faces than the top after my adjustments. Compare with left foot in background of this image.

This is a known issue in Blender that the developers refuse to fix. It’s not compatible with Blender’s stupid version of their bone structure. There’s no standard way to convert it, you have to get the Tpost model, export to OBJ or whatever. Then add the bones again. The only other suggestion is to stop using Blender and use a software that won’t break UE creator characters.

Thank you for the answer. I was having trouble finding the problem between Unreal, FModel, the psk importer, and Blender. I've read that Unreal has bones as a point while Blender has bones as two points, but I don't know enough about armatures or Unreal to confirm that.

>and use a software that won’t break UE creator characters.
Can you name a few? I'm willing to consider paid options so long as the resources for self-teaching are available. After a year of this I've decided I will probably spend a lot of time doing 3D stuff.

>you have to get the Tpost model, export to OBJ or whatever
I interpreted this as "Export it as an .obj and reimport it" but that doesn't seem to preserve the armature. I only need the pose, not the animation, so at this point I'm thinking I'll just rig a simple skeleton myself. This will have the added benefit of making minor adjustments so it's more printable. Thank you for your help.

That's just the anon who goes to every thread to say Blender can't do [insert your question here], nothing he answered is actually relevant to you

Well why don’t you fix the problem instead of enforcing the stereotype that Blander users have created themselves.
