Does anyone who traces photos pretends being an artist? I've never seen that.

there are many different arts, and types of artists

you can't deny a "graphic artist" his title, because he never picked up a paintbrush in his life.

If you do anything other than characters, you can do this from day 0. References are still useful for inspiration and ideas, but there is no need to trace.

You clearly don't know what are you talking about, this is 3d not your deviant art Naruto doodles.

Oh that's what OP meant? I was trying to solve his post like a riddle. I figured he was implying some kind of tracing. But I wasn't sure what tracing he was talking about. I guess he must have meant following building plans. That makes a kind of sense.

3d is great for greyboxing architecture btw. I mean, you can sketch architecture in Blender really fast and easy, and then carefully refine it step by step into a nicely modeled thing.
Clip Studio Paint btw has built-in rigged 3d character models that you can pose and rotate and then use it as background for tracing over.

No, he's saying that putting those reference planes up in front/side view and then making the model that way is "tracing" and that the people that do this (which is absolutely no one) claim themselves to be "artists".
On the one hand, I agree, but on the other, so does everyone else because no one claims to be a 3d artist doing that. They say they're a 3d modeller.

I put my little interjection in the wrong place. I mean to say that no one claims to be an artist doing this technique, not that no one does the reference plane thing.

Very brave of you to say that. Most artists on the internet these days go berserk at the idea of people not using references 100% of the time, even if the person in question is really good at what they do.

That's because almost everyone is only ever drawing characters. That also makes it more competitive, and you want to have great anatomy etc.
The idea of not using references sounds less wild when you actually mean drawing abstract patterns or some fantastic non-existing dimensions.

> On the one hand, I agree, but on the other, so does everyone else because no one claims to be a 3d artist doing that. They say they're a 3d modeller.
Also I think many people who are into lowpoly 3d characters are drawing 2d version themselves and then trace it into 3d using front/side view extrusion technique.
I absolutely can't draw, but I sketch on paper or tablet a little bit for almost every 3d project and with symmetry enabled even I was able to pull a satisfying character outline with minor details to trace it into 3d.

I think OP is talking about "objects" though, not necessarily characters. Which makes it even more retarded because even objects in real life are designed on paper or some kind of similar medium and recreated using those documents.

It's the trace retard, there was a thread a few months ago of him discussing how texture projection and rigging was tracing, he doesn't have a clue what is talking about

Now you sound retarded because in most cases it's easier to design 3d objects in 3d than on paper. Especially if it's hardsurface stuff.

I'm saying that at some point an object is designed on some kind of medium for others to follow. Using that medium as a way of recreating an object being considered "tracing" and "cheating" is retarded.
Whether it's a 3d cad model, architectural plans/blueprint, patent documents, napkin drawing etc.

Oh, then I was way fucking off, though OP is still retarded.
Making an object from a texture is just one tool (of many) that a 3d artist uses to create an object. And I'm not opposed to using that term (3d artist) in this case, because you'd use this technique 100% in a situation where you need a shitload of assets to fill a larger scene, something widely regarded as a creative work, or "art".
It's quick and dirty, and literally everyone using that technique knows that. I wouldn't go as far as calling it cheating though. Fuck, at one point it was how things were done "properly" and is regarded as kind of an old technique.
