The SKS was pretty good by 1945 standards, the AK just obsoleted it, unless you're the People's Liberation Army and you tell yourself that you can get by with just sheer marksmanship as a replacement for volume of fire.
For combat, I feel I would probably still pick the M14 over the SKS, as while the latter has less recoil, it also weighs about as much as the former, but having worse sights, capacity, and reloading.

Birdshot actually isn't sufficient to drop the drones reliably. Ukies did some testing on it, there's a video on jewtube. That said, there definitely are counters to them. EW and DEW are quite good at bringing down drones, and wires will potentially allow you to trace the way back to the operators. I recently saw a video of Russians taking down a wire guided drone with a pair of scissors.

It was too heavy, while not being controllable in auto and yet had the magazine was too small. It was a transition rifle between full cartridge rifles of WW2 and the modern assault rifle of today.
Would've probably fared better if they used the M1 carbine cartridge. Otherwise, it's a good gun that was a victim of the fact that "every soldier a marksman" wasn't viable in the era of combined arms.

It's a good gun. It was a bad gun for its time and its development was a shitfest. People jerk off the Garand and shit on the M14, but they're nearly the same thing except the M14 came out almost 20 years later at a point in history when that kind of weapon was obsolete. The individual design elements of the M14 were all available during the Garand's trials before WW2, so if the Army had more foresight it could have been the M1 and gone down in history as one of the greatest rifles instead.

It's actually a super comfy gun to shoot (in semi.) I sold my Garand after getting one.
