That's been my biggest gripe in the overall story. We're lead to believe that this guy is a force of nature and that whole ass countries can't beat him without shit going down because reasons lol, and that this is the fight to reshape history and blah blah blah and it's all just very... flat. There's just no substance to anything. No flavour. No noise. No smell. Nothing. It feels so empty and bland and boring. I don't even particularly dislike Shen or Yan or most of the other characters. I just don't really think this is the story that should be told using these characters, if that makes sense. Like, if it was another story with the same characters then it probably would have been fine. This just ain't it.

A lot of Kengan feels like Sandro using tropes despite not really understanding why they worked. Raian for example is very similar to Z era Broly but Z era Broly is an antagonist and not a protagonist the narrative loves to reward. This was one of the funniest parts of that humiliation ritual. Yumi interacted with Koga for like five seconds years ago. They never saw each other again, not at the tournament, and Yumi fled and went into hiding for some reason after there, so there's no plausible way they could have offscreen.
Little things like that are one of the most fascinating bits of Sandro's psychosis, because he's JUST aware enough to realize that Koga kicking down the door of a guy who doesn't even know who he is, beating him half to death, then telling him to run for his life would make him look like an absolute psychopath even more.

you know, i liked koga as a protag up until the KvP tourney but thinking about it, i've spent a much longer time wishing him to return to the cool way he was before, than the time he spent actually being cool.
it took about a year since the start of omega to basically write Koga out of the story, and after that up until now, another 4 years passed of him being completely neutered and irrelevant.
i expect sandro to bring him out and his special eyes somehow in the finale to squeeze a little bit of relevance out of him but it all feels so flat. complete waste of a character, it would probably have been better if he simply didn't even exist considering how the story treated him

Terashi would have slapped his ass with his vibrating hands and it would have thrown him off well enough that Terashi probably could have gotten a ring-out. Remember that fucking Okubo took a second to adjust to him. He was never in any danger of losing to Terashi, but he's also treated as being an extraordinarily talented fighter with years of professional and underground experience with many wins against comparable fighters under his belt.
To put it in perspective, Chiba was making a non-warmed-up Hatsumi sweat and his main failing against him was trying to beat him at his own game. I have zero doubt in my mind that Koga would have gotten fucked by Chiba's change-up tactics, doubly so since he remained an active Kengan fighter after the KAT. Hell, Koga would have lost to R1 Hatsumi.

The discussion around this post got me to check that manga, and it's honestly garbage. Some people have described it as Kakegurui (minus the crazy reaction faces and hot girls) but with fights instead of gambles, and that's exactly what it is, mostly for worse. It's martial arts slop kusomanga of the highest order. What's actually far more interesting than the manga itself is the story behind it. It turns out it's a complete retooling of a one-shot manga by the same writer/artist pair, with the main characters sharing names and appearances with the ones in BB and pretty much nothing else. The one shot was called "Koroshi to Uso no Marriage" and was a crime thriller romance obviously inspired by the premise of Spy x Family with a few tweaks, and while not exactly revolutionary or brilliant, it was a much superior concept and setting compared to the serialized version and had a certain amount of hype behind it when the serialization was announced. Apparently a lot of people were disappointed by the shift in well, pretty much everything, and the whole thing reeks of editorial meddling, especially since the magazine where it runs already had other crime thriller manga and the changes were a way to avoid cannibalizing their audience.

There is no plot anymore. At least no stated plot. There are a few rogue elements, but the story isn't even actively pursuing them.

Through my extensive research I've discovered that all fighting styles in Kengan can be broken down into 3 main components.

Principles is what all martial arts are derived from, any physical movement is an implementation of principles, although only Shen and those who've "scaled the wall" because of him can truly make use of it.

Jobber hexes and humble boons a mix of psychological warfare and tempering with the fabric of the universe. A mere utterance or simple action can reduce a champion into a tongue lolling punching bag, but most fighters seem unaware of the use of these.

And finally there's the most mysterious of them all, the Premonition. Despite its basic form, Foresight, being incredibly prevalent in the work we've yet to see how powerful the peak of it can be. The only two instances of it occurring in the work at all are Lolong's Premonition, which has yet to reach a conclusion and as such we can't know whether the predicted events can be changed, and Shen's Premonition of Luohan disrespecting Joji. In Shen's case however, we can't know if he saw the event beforehand and prevented it, or if he peered into an alternate universe after the fact and decided to punish Luohan, that villain. With only these two instances of the Premonition it's impossible to definitively say anything about it.

Some might argue that Shen didn't have a Premonition at all, that Luohan unconsciously performs a sort of reverse Premonition on anyone who perceives him, causing them all to see every possible horrible thing he performs in alternate universes, but such propaganda isn't to be trusted. Luohan is hated because he's evil, not because of any sort of curse he was born with.
